Common dog emergencies and how to act

Vomiting / diarrhoea injuries

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea can be signs of a serious illness although most cases are just stomach upsets that typically resolve within a day. If your dog develops any other signs like weakness or seems to be in pain, or even vomiting or diarrhoea contains blood you should immediately call your vet.

Injuries

  • Injury cases usually include road accidents, falls, bites and fractures. It can be extremely tricky sometimes to assess the severity of the injury, especially if there's an internal trauma. We recommend your dog is immediately taken to the vet if an injury occurs.

Breathing difficulties

  • You may notice light breathing, very loud breathing, choking or coughing. Breathing difficulties can result from foreign bodies in the throat, allergic reactions, asthma or lung disease. Firstly check if there is a foreign object in your dogs throat and visit the vet immediately.

Stings, bites, allergies

  • As summer is around the corner, these emergencies are the most common but can occur anytime in the year. Typical signs are swelling around the face, or hives, most easily seen on the belly. These can be quite itchy for your dog. Rarely, allergies caused by stings can lead to breathing difficulty or even a seizure. If you suspect that your dog may go through an allergic reaction, transfer him to the vet.
